How is it possible that we are already approaching the 2026 Olympic Games? While each season has it’s patterns with the normal rise and fall of the tension of each trimester, the overall calendar of the biathlon world operates on a four year window built towards a crescendo at each Olympics. The every four year event is the most prestigious moment. While biathlon remains the most popular winter sport in Europe, it is the one time a year that the sport really breaks through around the world. And even in Europe the excitement and tension mounts to see who can attain one of the most rare prizes in the sport, Olympic hardware. Well here we are in the final countdown to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games that will be, for our purposes, competed in the friendly and gorgeous venue at Antholz!

2) 2026 Winter Olympic Wish List

I’ve been thinking about these Olympic Games for months now. Truthfully for the last couple of years. As it’s been approaching I think about how much I want to certain athletes to get a moment of Olympic glory. Well now the races are upon us and I’ve decided to make my official wish list. This is not necessarily realistic in all instances, just purely a list of people I would love to see on the podium. It’s not any more complicated than that. So let’s get going!

3) Surprise Medal Contenders?

As the 2026 Olympic Games approach, most even casual biathlon fans know who will be the serious medal contenders in the non-relay races. If you’re new to biathlon or just tuning in for these Olympics take a quick glance back at some of the recaps found at this page https://penaltyloop.com/weekend-recps/ and you’ll find those athletes who have been performing so well this season.

But what about the athletes that aren’t expected? If you look back at the last few Olympic Games there is nearly always a name that you see now and think “Huh…that’s interesting.” Just a few examples:
– 2018 Peyongchang: Michal Krcmar and Dominik Windisch
– 2014 Sochi: Jaroslov Soukup
– 2010 Vancouver: Pavol Hurajt and Elena Khrustaleva

Legacy Definers

Quentin Fillon Maillet – There was a moment early in the 2020-2021 season that lives in my memory as clear as day. It was the first weekend of the season taking place in Kontiolahti. For the French men this was a major moment of transition. One of the true all time greats, Martin Fourcade, had gone into a somewhat early retirement at just 31 years old. The French team was struggling to find their way, looking at how to continue to challenge at the top of the sport without the man who had dominated it for so long. As that weekend came to a close you could almost see how the burden of leadership was weighing on the then 28 year old Quentin Fillon Maillet.

Fast forward now to February of 2026. Quentin Fillon Maillet has completely transformed his legacy. No longer standing in the shadow of one of the all time greats, QFM is now firmly entrenched as one of those men that we’ll remember forever. In the time since that difficult first post-Fourcade weekend QFM has done the following:
– 1 Overall World Cup Globe (2021-2022)
– 2 Discipline Globes (2021-2022 Sprint and Pursuit)
– 11 more World Championship medals for a total of 20
– 16 of his 19 career wins
– And now: 9 Olympic medals

5) Olympic Moments Part 2

The focus at the Olympics is of course on those athletes who compete for and win the medals. And why not? It’s the dream that all of these athletes are striving for. A medal at the Olympics represents one of the greatest achievements in sports.

But the Olympics is about far more than just three athletes per race. For so many just arriving to the Games is the culmination of years if not decades of exceptionally hard work and dedication. Any sort of good racing once there is a bonus . The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics saw many athletes live out their dreams, and even though they didn’t result in medals, are absolutely worth celebrating!

While I’ve picked quite a number here, it’s worth mentioning that this list could literally include every biathlete in the field because truly, making it to the Olympics is a moment worth celebrating.
